Cold hands, warm heart

Nobody knew that Darla was experiencing inner turmoil. She was getting decent grades, joined a competitive dance team, and maintained a high-status social life but privately she felt depressed: Darla's mother was very sick and she was terrified of losing her.

One day Darla decided to walk home after school and when she arrived at the front door her fingers felt numb from the bitter cold. Frustrated and frozen, she stomped upstairs to her bedroom, slammed the door behind her, and started wailing into her pillow.

As she was crying, she saw the Bible tucked underneath her bed. Darla reached for the book and propped it open to a random page. There was a verse of Scripture that she previously highlighted in yellow:

Do not be afraid—I am with you! I am your God—let nothing terrify you! I will make you strong and help you; I will protect you and save you.

Just then, Darla's mother knocked on her door to bring her a cup of hot chocolate (her favourite). Darla curled her frigid fingers around the toasty warm mug and was overwhelmed with a strong sense of peace and inexplicable comfort.

Darla didn't know what the future was going to hold but in that moment she was reminded that God was in control of the future... and that warmed her heart.
